chilean architects eugenio simonetti t + renato stewart l. have created 'costanera lyon 1', a prototypical office
tower in santiago, chile. the unified structure of this pair of office buildings combines vierendeel beams
and scissor columns to produce seismic resistant towers. a single mass exterior creates a thermal mass which is
easy to heat and cool without a double skin to reduce energy consumption. currently complete, the first prototype
features a portion of the corner which has been removed and placed upon the roof, creating a penthouse floor and pool.
the void is visible from the dynamic street and creates a different identity from the second prototype.


street perspective

the second iteration features cantilevered slabs to utilize the site area, but required additional support to resist the
lateral forces of the earthquake prone region. perimetral walls contribute to torsional rigidity while 21 vierendeel beams
carry the building's dead weight and open the interior for unobstructed outward views. fourteen scissor base columns
support the 16 slabs service placed around one core. conceived as a wholistic entity, each element is necessary to retain
its stability and without one piece, the structure would not stand.

architecture practice alleswirdgut based in wein, austria, has proposed the winning design for the 'st. pölten technology center' 
to be added to the campus in st. pölten, austria. the volume will contain training workshop spaces for the WIFI lower austria
new design university. the interior unifies the various functions by providing direct access from all floors, rooms and public spaces 
to a common lobby, heightening opportunities for communication between all building users. the lobby is connected to an
outdoor plaza which links in the shortest distance to the main WIFI campus building.

a roof-height truss structure and multiple floor plates are visible from the surrounding areas through a 
continuous glass facade. the internal activities are projected to passersby, creating a dynamic exterior within 
the small scale campus context.

OODA + OOIIO architecture: leeuwarden housing

portuguese firm OODA and madrid-based OOIIO architecture have collaborated to create 'leeuwarden housing - urban water lilies',
a residential proposal in leeuwarden, the netherlands. the design integrates water from the adjacent river, cultural traditions and
a balance of rural character within an urban setting. derived from the presence of water lilies in the freisland province, the site has
been envisioned as a series of lily pads upon which rest a diverse range of housing typologies.

a series of waterways divide plots with structures, green spaces and agricultural areas. comprised of a network of floating islands,
the masterplan bridges between water and land creating opportunities for sustainable ecosystems to develop. the city and natural
environment are able to coexist, while integrating sports, agricultural and public areas for dwellers. access for cars and bicycle paths
weave through the complex. sustainability is introduced with an apartment tower of stacked volumes with integrated wind turbines
to power the site along with various locations for solar and geothermal energy collection as well as water recycling.
