los angeles-based firm brooks + scarpa has unveiled their design for the 'kimball art center', an addition to an existing
building located at the downtown intersection of main street and heber avenue in park city, utah. the 22,000 square foot
extension takes the form of a cloud, bringing the sky's dream-like blue glow into the city streets, engaging onlookers and
increasing their sense of awareness. the facade produces the effect of an illuminated beacon, visually experienced from a distance
and within the immediate surroundings.
the exterior glazing is surfaced with a faceted rainscreen comprised of a translucent honeycomb material, which also contributes
to the building's thermal performance. at the ground level, a glass enclosure opens directly to the street and plaza, connecting
and transitioning the existing historic structure with the contemporary addition. the upper storeys appear to hover above
the transparent base, heightening the cloud-like appearance and creating a collective cohesion to the complex.
